THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Centre has decided to allocate an emergency aid of Rs 325 crore to Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Lakshadweep towards relief and rehabilitation work in the aftermath of Cyclone Ockhi.
The Centre will also help in the reconstruction of 1400 houses fully damaged due to Cyclone Ockhi, under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.
The Central aid has been announced close on the heels of Prime Minister Narendra Modi"s hurricane day-long visit to Lakshadweep and coastal areas of Kerala, Tamil Nadu on Tuesday.
Earlier, the Centre had allocated Rs 280 crore and Rs 76 crore allocated to Tamil Nadu and Kerala respectively. The present allocation of Rs 325 crore is apart from the previous aid.
While Rs 2 lakh will be provided to the next of kin of those killed in Cyclone Ockhi, Rs 50,000 will be allocated to those seriously injured in the disaster. This amount will be sanctioned under Prime Minister"s National Relief Fund.
During Modi"s visit to Kerala on Tuesday, the State had sought a special central assistance of Rs 7340 crore for rehabilitation and rebuilding of the Ockhi cyclone affected coastal villages here. The special package was sought by Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan during a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi here this evening.
The Prime Minister had assured the chief minister and others that the package would be considered sympathetically.
