THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Noted forensic surgeon and former medical education director Dr B Umadathan passed away here on Wednesday. He was 73. He breathed his last at KIMS hospital here. He was undergoing treatment for quite some time.
The last rites will be performed on Thursday at 11 am in his residence. He is survived by his wife Padma Kumari and children U Ramanathan, Dr U Vishwanathan and daughters-in-law Roopa and Roshni.
Born to Prof K Balaramapanicker, a Sanskrit scholar and writer and G Vimala on March 12 in 1946, he took MBBS and MD from Thiruvananthapuram Medical College.
He joined medical education department as tutor in 1969. He served as Forensic medicine professor in Govt. Medical Colleges at Thiruvananthapuram, Alappuzha, Kottayam and Thrissur.
Dr Umadathan also served as Govt medico-legal expert and consultant, medical legal advisor of Kerala Police, Medico-legal consultant to Libya govt.
He also penned science articles and books on criminal investigation. His books include ‘Police Suregonte Ormakurippukal’ and ‘Kuttaneshathile Vaidyasasthram’.
He was the principal of Thiruvananthapuram Medical College in 1995. He retired in 2001 from the post of state medical education director. He was serving as the forensic medical professor and departmental head of Amritha Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre. He had authored many books including Oru Police Surgeonate Ormakurippukal, Crime Keralam and Kuttaneshwathile Vaidyashasthram etc.
He had helped the police department with many sensational murder cases.
