THIRUVALLA: Philipose Mar Chrysostom Mar Thoma Valiya Metropolitan was laid to rest with full state honours on Thursday.

 

The Metropolitan Emeritus of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church passed away at 1:15 am on May 5. He was 104.

 

The Metropolitan was under special care at Kumbanad Fellowship Hospital for a long time due to health problems. The Metropolitan, who was admitted to the Believers Hospital in Thiruvalla on the 23rd of last month, was discharged on Monday following improvement in his health. However, on Tuesday night at 11 o’clock, the Speaker of the House, Dr Theodosius Mar Thoma officiated at the anointing service. He was later transferred to the intensive care unit. His end came at 1.15 am yesterday.

 

He was buried at the special cemetery for bishops beside the St Thomas Mar Thoma Church in Thiruvalla. Dr Theodosius Mar Thoma Metropolitan, the current primate of the Mar Thoma Syrian Church, led the funeral service.

 

The third service began at 8 am in the Dr Alexander Mar Thoma Auditorium and the fourth service was held at 3 pm. The funeral was held in accordance with the COVID-19 protocol. Taking the severe covid situation in the State, the arrangements were made for the live streaming of the funeral service by many TV channels and also via YouTube.

 

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Governor Arif Mohammad Khan paid their last respects.
